Special Cases

The transportation to the United States of children with special cases such as heart surgeries, congenital anomalies, severe orthopedic cases, endocrinology, cancer, maxilo-facial, plastic/reconstructive, esophagus and others, was how Ruth began helping our needy and poor children and we continue to do so.

The Ruth Paz Clinic

One of the Foundation's goals was to provide health care to low-income families.

In January 1997, with the invaluable help and support of actor Dennis Quaid and the International Children’s Hospital, the Ruth Paz Clinic became a reality.

Today, the clinic and its staff of twelve provide health care and medication to ten orphanages, the community surrounding the clinic, plus follow-up visits for patients provided by the International Health teams. An average of fifty people are seen per day.

Pediatric Neurosurgery Unit

The Foundation assists in the management and operation of the pediatric neurosurgery unit at the Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital, in cooperation with neurosurgeon Dr. Ena Miller and the other neurosurgeons working in the same hospital. This fully-staffed eight-bed unit predominately treats children born with neural tubal defects who need repeated surgeries and treatment. The cost to these families is great, but the emotional cost is even greater since there is a very strong stigma attached to these defects. The staff and a local group of volunteers are available to provide not only physical care for the children, but also much needed support for their families.

Out - Patient Clinic "Dr. Luis Bueso Arias"

Located within the Leonardo Martinez Public Hospital, evaluates and orients the patients to be seen by the corresponding Medical Team (Brigades).

It is attended by a part time MD, who not only evaluates the patients, but also determines the physical needs they would require prior surgery, such as: malnutrition, lab. Exams, Ultrasound, MRI's etc. Also, the patients are given post-surgery care.

Any expenses incurred for medications, analysis, exams required are covered by the Foundation from funds received from donations and moneys given by the Medical Teams.

This Clinic receives between 7 to 10 patients daily, free of charge.

International Surgical and Medical Teams

The Foundation has literally helped thousands of children to smile over the past several years by coordinating and hosting international reconstructive surgical teams throughout the year. While the original trips were primarily to repair cleft lip and palate defects, reconstructive hand and pediatric urology teams have been added as well. The combinations of these teams perform over 200 surgeries per year in San Pedro Sula. The Foundation also provides logistics for all international surgical teams that operate in Leonardo Martinez Hospital.
